  • Learning from her about what she needs and how our own past understanding of gender must shift has been a special gift, too. And I want her to be unapologetically herself. It’s past time for the Senate to finish the job and get the Equality Act to the president’s desk.Īs a mother, I am blessed with a beautiful, compassionate, creative child. Legislatively, the House of Representatives has already passed the Equality Act, our best chance for achieving full protection for LGBTQ+ Americans. The resolution recommits us to the important legislative work needed to ensure trans folks everywhere can live freely and safely as themselves. We must unequivocally and forcefully state for the record that trans rights are human rights, pass laws that make it so, and then enforce those laws.Īlong with my Transgender Equality Task Force co-chairs, we will be reintroducing a resolution recognizing Transgender Day of Visibility and celebrating the invaluable contributions trans, gender non-conforming, and nonbinary people have made to society. These attacks on our children are precisely why we cannot wait any longer to enshrine protections for trans kids into federal law. Never give up on your beautiful self and know that you are not alone. To transgender kids everywhere, I want you to know that we see you, we will stand with you, and we will fight for you. That’s why today, as we celebrate Transgender Day of Visibility, I stand with every single trans child and the parents who support them: the mother in Idaho who wants a “ world full of choices” for her 14-year-old trans daughter, the father in Alabama outraged to see his daughter’s existence treated as “ a problem to be fixed,” or the parents across Texas now trying to shield their children from the blind hatred of their state’s government. The bills are an outrageous violation of human rights. Another proposal in Idaho would make gender-affirming health care a felony, threatening those who help trans people travel out of state for care with life in prison.īoth of these bills are fueled by a cocktail of ignorance, transphobia, and malice for trans kids, their parents, and the doctors and the communities who want to help them. The order from the governor is as unconstitutional as it is openly discriminatory and hostile to the well-being of these children. Texas governor Greg Abbott horrifyingly weaponized the state’s child welfare agency to terrorize and alienate families of transgender kids following best-practice, evidence-based medical advice for their children. Merely discussing gender and sexuality in public schools has been deemed a threat, and the parents of trans kids are being wrongfully demonized as predators and abusers. Trans stories have been removed from public libraries. States have gone against the advice of medical professionals and banned the gender-affirming care trans kids need to thrive.
